The respect I owe my readers

An author is privileged to engage with a reader far longer than any other art form.
Most of us devote more time to boiling an egg than we spend looking at a painting or sculpture. You can experience a film or a concert in the time it takes to wash and dry a load of laundry. In a book, however, the reader and author cohabitate consciousness much longer, often over a span of days.
That’s why I believe a writer owes readers the respect of honing their story until reading it is effortless. The hard work should be mine, not yours.
